Up this week at the Convergent Books blog, my post about a production of Romeo and Juliet that startled me and caused me to fall in love with the play for the first time.
"But at the heart of this raunchy, noisy show were Shakespeare’s words and, somehow despite it all–or maybe because of how unnerving it was–I was able to hear them for the first time. I’d never before realized how much Romeo and Juliet simmers with hate and violence. I guess I was always too focused on the young lovers. Now though, I saw how the venomous hatred the elder Capulets and Montagues shared echoed through the story, had infected their hearts and community, and – quite literally – would poison their children to death."
